Recently, airlines were thought to be becoming stricter regarding carry-on luggage. However, airlines enhanced their operations to provide passengers with a more comfortable, safe, and efficient travel experience. One way to do so is by reminding their passengers to strictly adhere to their varying cabin baggage policies, which are in place to ensure a faster and seamless boarding and disembarking process, as well as fair access to the overhead compartments for all.
It is important to note that different airlines have different guidelines for carry-on luggage. Most airlines inform their passengers of the size and weight limits when passengers book their flights or on the airlines’ respective websites. Usually, a passenger can bring one piece of carry-on luggage, such as a small suitcase, and one personal item, like a laptop bag or purse. Specifically, low-cost carriers are stricter as they do not want people to bring too much on board. Meanwhile, full-service airlines are more relaxed if a passenger’s bag is not too big. It is best to always check the airline’s specific guidelines before packing. Some airlines will carefully check a passenger’s bag’s size and weight, while others may be more relaxed if a passenger’s bag is not large or heavy.
The following are important tips to remember to avoid issues with carry-on luggage. Passengers should check the airline’s carry-on luggage guidelines through its website, which will provide them with the exact size and weight limits. Moreover, they must measure and weigh carry-on luggage before traveling. If possible, pack light, as even if the bag meets the size requirement, it can still get charged for being too heavy. They could also try to board early as the earlier passengers board the plane, the better chance passengers have of finding space in the overhead bins for their carry-on bags.
Furthermore, passengers may consider a personal item as many airlines let passengers take a personal item on board, like a laptop bag or a small sling bag. If the carry-on luggage is full, passengers can put smaller items like a book or snacks in their respective personal items. Such important tips to remember can help passengers have a smooth airport experience and avoid excess luggage fees.
For example, Air Asia’s policy states explicitly that each guest is permitted to bring only a maximum of one carry-on luggage and one small personal item onboard with a combined total weight of 7kg. One carry-on luggage, such as a trolley bag or backpack, must have the maximum dimensions of 56 cm (H) x 36 cm (W) x 23 cm (D) and must fit in the overhead storage compartment. Meanwhile, one small personal item such as a handbag, laptop bag, or paper bag must have the maximum dimensions of 40 cm (H) x 30 cm (W) x 10 cm (D) and must fit under the seat in front of the passenger. In addition, multiple items strapped, wrapped, or tied together are not counted as one piece. Further, all items purchased at the airport are counted as part of the carry-on luggage allowance.
As airline passengers, following the carry-on luggage policy is essential to avoid unexpected higher charges at the airport and reduce congestion. Compliance also helps maintain safety and comfort while promoting fairness, ensuring a smoother travel experience for all passengers. The cabin baggage policy will help flights leave on time and ensure fair access to overhead compartments for all passengers.
