Without a doubt, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has pros and cons for both teaching and learning. The responsible use of AI is a crucial aspect of developing lifelong learning skills among students and teachers alike (University of the Philippines Open University, 2023). With this, we asked an AISAT student what comes to mind when they hear the word AI and how to advocate for the responsible use of AI in education.
For Mr. Lloyd Aldrich Bañas, AISAT Ambassador 2024, what comes to his mind is the evolving technology and its potential to either change or destroy the world we live in. Moreover, he shared that as a student, Mr. Bañas would start by promoting awareness that AI is now an integral part of our lives, serving as a supportive tool to elevate our human potential, rather than a shortcut. He also emphasized leading by example to his peers, using AI ethically in his studies while avoiding overreliance and dishonesty in his work. Furthermore, Mr. Bañas is encouraging the school to conduct digital literacy workshops or seminars to boost students’ awareness of the digital world, including its strengths and dangers. He concluded by saying,

“This way, we can be responsible users in the evolving digital space.”
Additionally, as a first-year Master’s in Management student at the University of the Philippines Mindanao myself, I had the opportunity to attend the webinar “AI in Education: UP’s Policy and Best Practices for the Responsible Use of AI in Teaching and Learning,” held on September 8, 2025, via Zoom. The webinar highlighted the cycle of responsible AI use, which involves copying or collecting, reviewing, revising, and pasting or producing. Furthermore, the webinar presented student-recommended guidelines for AI use, including utilizing AI as a learning tool, verifying AI outputs, maintaining transparency, respecting boundaries, and adhering to institutional guidelines. Finally, the webinar suggested assessment strategies in the era of AI, including AI-resilient strategies, AI-positive strategies, and human-centered strategies.
With AISAT’s AI policy on its way, its guidelines will serve as standards and guiding principles on the use of AI for both students and teachers. The policy will include guidelines for teachers, such as course design and delivery, as well as guidelines for students, with an emphasis on plagiarism and the proper use of AI. Together, let us use AI responsibly, whether as a tool or an assistant, as it would eventually aid us in making all our dreams take flight!
